As part of its Community Week programme, Milliken associates from its Wigan and Bury production plants donated their time to install its unique Mash Up waste reducing carpet tiles at AB-UK, a local charity supporting families with autistic children.
The venue was a new play centre the charity had recently moved into which was ideal in many ways, but in desperate need of a new floorcovering. The Mash Up carpet tiles by their very existence also do good as part of the circular economy by helping to eliminate waste.
Mash Up is a creative product range where excess carpet tiles from overruns, new product development materials, excess inventory or unused samples are put to good use. Grouped together into visually cohesive colour combinations, the concept delivers a dynamic and striking floor effect that offers a sustainable and budget-friendly floor covering.

For AB-UK, the play centre is a sanctuary for autistic children to enjoy and for their families to meet, support and share experiences in a safe and understanding environment. Having donated the carpet tiles to the charity, the Milliken team worked together to strip out the old blue felt carpet and install the cushion-backed Mash Up carpet to transformative effect. The batchless nature of Mash Up tiles means that they could be installed in any direction allowing the team to very quickly turn the building into a bright, welcoming and comfortable space for visitors to enjoy.
The open play area and café zone were carpeted in a combination of the Mash Up Darks colour palette interspersed with some bright pops of colour with random Bright tiles. The toddler area was carpeted in the Brights range for a vibrant and fun feel.
The carpet’s WellBAC® cushion backing meant that not only was everywhere much more comfortable underfoot, but the acoustic properties of the backing also helps absorb noise. This was particularly important for this space where children with autism are often hypersensitive to sound.
AB-UK’s founder Cordelia Singh, an inspiration herself, shared with us her thoughts on the day the Milliken team came.
Community Week is a Milliken global initiative where employees dedicate time to making positive change to communities local to its manufacturing facilities around the world.
