When the values of two enterprises come together to create something amazingly positive, it can be a truly wonderful thing. Last year, Milliken and Fur Clemt, a community interest company local to its UK manufacturing plant in Wigan, did just that, finding common ground through a shared concern for waste reduction.
FINDING COMMON GROUND
Fur Clemt, a social enterprise dedicated to reducing food waste, supports its local community by alleviating food poverty. From humble beginnings 10 years ago when they were offering spare bread to people in a café, the enterprise has since seen huge expansion as the awareness and need for its services has grown. In recognition of its extraordinary efforts, Wigan Council rewarded the CIC with a larger building to work from. Albeit in need of refurbishment, this has allowed Fur Clemt to continue its important work.
In dire need of new floorcoverings for its various community spaces, the team at Fur Clemt called on Milliken to provide carpet for their new building. Following a meeting of minds, they collectively came upon an ideal solution that would satisfy their mutual focus on waste reduction, support their shared community and lighten their load on the planet.
SUSTAINABLE THINKING IN FLOORING
Milliken’s Mash Up carpet collection was born out of an idea by one of the company’s long-serving quality managers to find ways of using excess first quality carpet tiles. Derived from production overruns, new design development tiles and unused inventory and samples, the batchless collection of premium tiles allows you to create a glorious patchwork style look on the floor. With every Mash Up installation completely unique, the collection offers the creative flexibility to choose from six colour palettes, either installed independently or mixed together. As a brilliantly innovative idea for reducing Milliken’s carpet tile waste, Mash Up was the perfect solution for Fur Clemt’s new floorcovering.
A combination of blues and beiges create a more welcoming and comfortable environment for Fur Clemt’s Family and Training Rooms. A colourful combination of Mash Up planks, installed herringbone style, provide warmth and vibrance to their co-working and digital skills space. The team at Fur Clemt now find their building much more pleasant to work and more inviting for their community visitors.
Today, Fur Clemt is a thriving community hub with an army of volunteers that play a crucial role in supporting local people in need of nourishment, knowledge, social and mental support. Quite appropriately, the company’s name 'Fur Clemt' originates from the local Wigan vernacular as a phrase meaning ‘Very Hungry’.
