Open Studio: Designed for Creative Freedom
What happens when you treat flooring like a canvas?
Introducing Open Studio—a collection inspired by artistic experimentation, time-honoured techniques, and the freedom to create without restriction. Rooted in the raw, expressive nature of making, Open Studio invites designers to step into the role of artist: to explore, layer, and compose spaces with intention.
At its core, the collection celebrates process over perfection. It captures the energy of mark-making, the beauty of materiality, and the subtle tension between control and spontaneity. Drawing on multimedia techniques—from plasterwork to print—the designs reinterpret artistic mediums as tactile, contemporary carpet tiles.
With two neutral foundations and one expressive, colour-led pattern, Open Studio is a toolkit for creative interiors—designed to adapt, evolve, and inspire.
Designed Through an Artistic Lens
Open Studio is built around three distinct yet complementary patterns, each rooted in a different stage of the creative process.
Canvas
Inspired by a painter’s brushwork, Canvas brings movement and depth to the floor. Bold, gestural strokes sit alongside softer, organic forms, creating a composition that feels both dynamic and balanced.
There’s an intentional irregularity to the design—marks that feel unresolved, textures that appear layered over time. Like a canvas left mid-process, it captures the spontaneity of modern abstract painting, inviting interpretation rather than dictating it.
Primer
Every creative act begins with possibility. Primer reflects that moment.
Taking its cue from a primed canvas, the design is subtle, tonal, and quietly expressive. Soft neutrals build in layers, creating a surface that feels atmospheric and open. It’s understated, but never flat—offering just enough texture and variation to bring depth to a space.
As a foundation, Primer works effortlessly across schemes, acting as a calm backdrop or a starting point for more expressive combinations.
Canvas Trace
Building on the Canvas pattern, Canvas Trace introduces a subtle layer of colour. Flecks of pigment appear almost organically across the surface—quiet interventions that bring warmth, rhythm, and energy.
These moments of colour create opportunities to connect with broader interior palettes, making it easy to introduce contrast or accent tones without overwhelming the space. It’s a refined way to add personality—considered, not decorative.
A Global Perspective, Designed for Local Impact
Open Studio is the result of collaboration across Milliken’s global design team—bringing together diverse perspectives, influences, and creative approaches.
Following the success of the concept internationally, its relevance for European interiors became clear. There is a growing desire for materials that feel authentic, expressive, and grounded in craft—yet practical enough for everyday commercial use.
By translating global design thinking into a collection tailored for regional needs, Open Studio reflects both the universality of artistic expression and the specificity of local design contexts.
Manufactured in the UK, Close to Our Customers
Open Studio is manufactured at Milliken’s facility in Wigan, North West England, where we are proud to mark over 40 years of UK manufacturing.
Producing locally matters. By manufacturing closer to our customers, we reduce transport requirements and improve responsiveness—while also supporting a regional supply chain. More than 50% of raw materials are sourced within a 60-mile radius of the site, reinforcing our commitment to responsible production.
It’s a global collection with a local footprint—designed with intention at every stage.
Designed to Work Seamlessly Together
Open Studio is built around a sophisticated, monochromatic palette—reflecting the tones most commonly used in contemporary interior schemes.
But it’s not limited to neutral spaces.
The collection is designed to pair effortlessly with other Milliken ranges, particularly Tracing Landscapes, which shares the same yarn system. This allows designers to introduce blocks of colour, scale contrast, or zoning strategies with confidence.
The flexibility of the system gives you creative control—whether you’re designing for subtle cohesion or bold visual impact.
Performance That Supports Everyday Use
Open Studio combines aesthetics with high-performance design—built to meet the demands of commercial environments without compromising on look or feel.
The collection is manufactured using ECONYL® 100% regenerated nylon, supporting circular material use while delivering durability and resilience. Despite its soft, luxurious appearance, it achieves a low embodied carbon figure of 5.36kg CO2 e/m2, reflecting a balanced approach to performance and environmental impact.
The Advantage of WellBAC™ Comfort Plus
Every Open Studio tile is backed with WellBAC™ Comfort Plus as standard—Milliken’s signature cushion backing that enhances performance, sustainability, and wellbeing.

It’s not an optional upgrade—it’s the foundation of how our carpet performs.
A Collection That Invites Creativity
Open Studio is more than a flooring collection—it’s an invitation.
An invitation to experiment with texture, tone, and pattern. To layer ideas and create spaces that feel considered, expressive, and human. To design with both creativity and responsibility in mind.
Because the best interiors don’t just look finished—they feel like something is still unfolding.
